Spiritual 🌸 Tips 💫 — How To Create An Altar + What’s The Purpose?

I’m sure you’re here because you want insight on "How to create an altar to honor your ancestors?"

Let's cover a few things first.

What is an altar? An altar is usually place where sacrifices are offered or incense is burned in worship. You can think of an ancestor altar as a place where offerings are made and reverence is given to the spirits of those who came before us.

Why should you create an altar? Creating an ancestor altar is a way for us to acknowledge their presence and guidance in our lives.

Who are our ancestors? Our ancestors would be anyone who played a significant role in our lives. Use your altar as a place to give thanks to all those who came before you or played a significant role in your life.

Who are you honoring? You're honoring your ancestors. Most of the time we just think our ancestors are someone who's deceased which is true but it's also those who played an important role in our lives as well such as a teacher, caregiver, family friend, etc. When creating your altar you want to make sure you're inviting ancestors that are loving and helpful. Please make sure you're not inviting someone to your altar that did not like you in the earthly world 🌎 but they tolerated you because you were family.

Ancestor Altar Checklist

(the basics)

  1. Table or shelf in a sacred and safe place/space

  2. Altar cloth

  3. Candle

  4. Incense

  5. Glass of water 💦

  6. Pictures + memories

  7. Items that represent the four elements (Earth, Air, Fire and Water)

SideNote : Make sure the pictures on your altar don't show anyone who is still living. Also, make sure you had a positive relationship with your ancestor because you don't want to invite anyone to your altar that you had an unsettling relationship with.

Please be advised altars are made out of love and being creative it doesn't have to expensive. If you have very little space for an altar you can use your purse, shelf, drawer or a wooded box.
